What is superannuation?

Superannuation is a long-term retirement savings system. Employers generally pay a percentage of an eligible employee’s ordinary time earnings into a super fund, where the money is invested until a condition of release is met.

This Superannuation Calculator Australia projects a balance by combining the current account balance, 12% employer contributions, voluntary annual contributions and compound investment returns.

How to use the super calculator

  1. Enter your current and planned retirement ages.
  2. Add annual salary and current super balance.
  3. Enter any voluntary yearly contribution.
  4. Keep the 7% return assumption or test another long-term rate.
  5. Compare projected balance, contributions and growth.

Super Guarantee rate and assumptions

The Super Guarantee rate is fixed at 12% from 1 July 2025 for this estimate. The rate rose gradually over time before reaching 12%, so historical employer contributions may have been lower. This projection assumes today’s salary remains constant and applies 12% each year until retirement.

The default 7% return is editable. It is a nominal assumption, not a forecast. The calculation adds annual contributions after applying the year’s return, so actual fund timing can differ.

Worked example: age 30 to 67

With a $90,000 salary, the employer contribution is $10,800 per year at 12%. Adding $3,000 voluntarily produces $13,800 of yearly contributions. Over 37 years, compound growth can become a substantial part of the projected balance, although actual returns, fees, taxes and salary changes will alter the result.

Benefits of projecting super

  • See how time and compounding affect retirement savings.
  • Separate employer, voluntary and investment-growth components.
  • Test a different retirement age or return assumption.
  • Understand why early contributions can matter.

Salary sacrifice and voluntary contributions

Salary sacrifice can direct pre-tax pay into super under an arrangement with an employer. Tax treatment, contribution caps and personal circumstances matter. A dedicated salary sacrifice calculator is planned; this tool treats voluntary contributions as a simple annual amount and does not calculate contribution tax or take-home pay effects.

Estimate only: the result excludes administration and investment fees, insurance premiums, contribution tax, earnings tax, inflation, salary growth, contribution caps and market volatility. It is not a retirement income forecast or personal financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

What Super Guarantee rate does the calculator use?

It uses 12%, the rate from 1 July 2025 under the supplied assumption.

Is 7% a guaranteed return?

No. It is only an editable assumption. Investment returns can be higher, lower or negative.

Does the result include fees and tax?

No. Both can materially reduce the final balance.

Can I model salary sacrifice?

You can enter an annual voluntary amount, but this tool does not calculate tax savings or contribution caps.

Use a range, not one forecast

Run the calculation with conservative, middle and higher return assumptions. Then compare the projection with current fund information and consider qualified advice for a personal retirement plan.
