What the estimate includes

The National Employment Standards, or NES (minimum national employment rights), set a redundancy scale based on completed years. Notice pay follows a separate service scale, with an extra week for an employee aged 45 or over who has at least two years of service.

How to use it

  1. Enter base salary, service and age.
  2. Add the dollar value of unused annual and long service leave.
  3. Select genuine redundancy and preservation-age status.
  4. Review each component, estimated ETP tax and net total.

Worked example

Six completed years gives 11 weeks of NES redundancy pay. Notice is four weeks, plus one extra week for someone aged 45 or over with at least two years. A genuine 2025–26 redundancy has a tax-free limit of $13,100 plus $6,552 per completed year.

Benefits

  • Separates redundancy, notice and leave.
  • Applies the unusual drop from 16 weeks at 9–10 years to 12 weeks at 10 years or more.
  • Shows the 2025–26 genuine redundancy tax-free formula and an ETP estimate.

Small business note: employers with fewer than 15 employees can be exempt from NES redundancy pay, although an award or agreement may create a different entitlement.

Frequently asked questions

Why does redundancy pay fall to 12 weeks after 10 years?

The NES scale recognises that long service leave may also become payable after long service.

Is unused leave part of the ETP?

Unused annual and long service leave are generally taxed under separate termination-payment rules and are shown separately here.

What is the 2025–26 tax-free genuine redundancy formula?

It is $13,100 plus $6,552 for each completed year of service, capped by the eligible payment.

What ETP tax rates are used?

The estimate uses 32% below preservation age or 17% at or above preservation age, on the taxable ETP up to the $260,000 cap.

Can an award provide more?

Yes. An award, enterprise agreement, contract or workplace policy may provide different or higher amounts.
